Cooking Seasonal Flavours that Incorporate the 'Five Elements'

(Exclusive to overnight guests.)

Based on the concept of the aforementioned 'five elements' of the human body, our cooking programme supports guests' inner balance through seasonal dietary wellness and gut health practices, all tailored to their individual condition and constitution.

Using local Oita ingredients and fermented seasonings, you’ll have the chance to explore recipes that allow you to savour the seasons whilst nourishing your body from within.

By preparing lunches and dinners together in the shared kitchen, whilst sharing conversation and insights, you'll experience a space of both discovery and connection.

Originating in ancient China, the concept of the Five Elements classifies all things in nature into 'Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water.' Based on the notion that the Whole maintains harmony through these elements either supporting or restraining one another, the concept also came to be applied to Oriental medicine. Within the context of the human body, the 'five elements' are here represented through five essential organs, namely: the liver, heart, spleen, lungs and kidneys. Understanding the intricate relationship between these five organs is believed to help prevent illness, and as such can be applied to everyday wellness practices.

Lifestyle × Autonomic Nervous System Regulation Workshops

We offer a variety of workshops customised according to the Five Elements*, each designed for specific lifestyles and seasonal needs. We'll provide guidance on how to care for yourself when you tend to put your needs last: how to navigate the seasonal transitional periods (known as doyo in Japanese), as well as the relationships between the seasons, food, and other aspects of health such as immunity, sleep, female/male hormones, and menopause.

During your stay, you can also take advantage of nearby restaurants, supermarkets, takeaway and delivery services.

Through bodyweight-based stretching and repeated deep breathing, you'll be able to ease fatigue, shoulder and back tension, as well as other stresses built up from your busy daily routine. This pairs excellently with onsen therapy, as the thermal effects help further improve the body’s flexibility.
